Media Literacy Discussion

Part of today's class was to be focused on your reactions to the Marshall McLuhan quote, which was something like this:

All media are extensions of some human faculty- psychic or physical. The wheel is an extension of the foot; the book is an extension of the eye; clothing, an extension of the skin; electric circuitry, an extension of the central nervous system.

The basic question is: If you agree with that logic, what would you say the Internet is an extension of? Why?

Please summarize your answer by posting a comment below. Then, as more people leave comments, comment on two other postings. Lastly, react to others' comments on your original post. In other words, you should have at least five (5) comments: the original, two comments on other people's initial post, and reactions to what people said to you.

Please comment intelligently. A "good job" is not a comment. Be substantial.

The internet is an extension of our brain. I say this because the internet works a lot like our brains. When we think about something or need to re-call something our brain scans to find or try to find what we are thinking about. The same thing happens with the internet. When we are trying to find information on something from the internet it scans around until it finds something that matches.

I completely agree. Just like the internet, our brain holds ton of information whether it be pointless facts and figures or important dates or happenings. We search our brain or think hard much like the internet searches the world wide web to come up with some type of info.

If the Marshall McLuhan quote is basically true, then the Internet can be recognized as an extension of the mouth. This suggestion makes sense to me because of the Internets ability to pass along what we can identify as word of mouth due to the users capability to address social issues through blogs, e-mails, wall posts, etc...

If it is true that all media are extensions of some human faculty, I think the Internet is an extension of the mind. Before the Internet people would wonder and think about things that were out of their reach and world. With the invention of the Internet, people have the capability to explore the questions and their particular points of interest with the single click of a button. Now when someone reads about Venice in a book, they can actually virtually experience it through the Internet by pictures and further information. There is a vast amount of information available at the tips of someone’s fingers. The human mind and Internet are both filled with a vast amount of information and must work together to get the most out of one another.

The internet would be like the frontal lobe of the brain. This part of the brain is used for many congnitive functions that determine how we communicate. Similarly, the internet is a tool we use to communicate. The internet is used to access information just like the frontal lobe is used to intake knowledge.
Lastly, the internet had become an imporant staple in how people intake knowledge; the frontal lobe is vitally imporant to our ability to access information.

Krystal's opinion of why the internet is like an extention of the mind is brilliant. Now that we have access to the internet we have much more information at our fingertips. We can use our mind to expand on ideas like we can use the internet to expand on our knowledge.

Kendals idea that like the internet, our brain can hold great amounts of information, useless or otherwise. In this respect, the mind is refelcted as filled with information that can be retreived and then stored again to be retreived at another time. His interpretations illustrates McLuhans idea efficiently.

the internet is an extension of the human conscience. It relys on a brain to function or even exist, while containing a thousand tongues, morals, and the ability to know right from wrong. It speaks through different forms of media, and is often used to seek the right answer, in any situation, though it has the capability of giving us the wrong one.

Jermeka Nixon said...

i agree with hope about it acting as a tongue or many tongues for that matter in the aspect of its ability to address issues through various forms of context

Jermeka Nixon said...

Very right Krystal, the internet has advanced like the human mind and has been stuffed with information.. useful and useless!

The Internet is an extension of our imagination. We have always dreamed and hoped fore something that could give us information at the drop of a hat, we have that now; we have the technology to basically get whatever we want, whenever we want. We can go back to episodes of "The Jetsons" and there are objects and ideas on that simple cartoon that we believed to be so farfetched and it would never happen and we now have most of the things that were viewed on that show. I think the Intetnet was a literal building block off of Marconi and Armstrong's invention of the telephone that we could transmit messages through air; people have built upon those achievements over and over again to finally have something as incredible as the Internet.

I think the internet is an extension of our body. Why i say that is because as we have gotten older we have adapted information from different sources that has enhanced our common knowledge of todays world. The internet ever since it was invented has been getting information from different sources that has been able to enhance its information of todays common world.

i agree with frankie because we have always imagined some of the stuff that the internet brings to life. Like watching old shows, seeing yourself in videos things we always thought would always be a fanatsy and never reality

Anonymous said...

i also agree with mary beth. The internet is like our brains, becasue it processes so much information and when you need information you can always go back to sources you found on the internet. Just like the brain you can always go back to things that you have stored in your brain in case you need it.

Franki your response that the internet relates to our imagination really caught my attention. I considered the internet to be like the human brain, but never did the idea that the internet was like the imagination come to mind. However, I totally agree with you. The internet has opened many doors and has become a valuable mean for efficiently seeking information.

Krystal your response proved a good point. I liked that you provided the example of Venice and that when someone reads a book or maybe even a traveler's guide, they can further explore the attraction through means of virutal experience in pictures and information. I also like how you related the internet to the mind when you explained that the two had to work together to get the most out of one another... I absolutely agree.

I believe the internet is an extension of our curiosity. We have the ability to search for anything we desire. We can Google any question imaginable or search for anything that peaks our curiosity.

Cheryl B said...

I agree with Frankie that the internet is an extension of our imagination. With Google earth we can use our imagination and travel to different areas of the country. It is brought to real life in a matter of seconds.

I also agree with Mary Beth the internet is an extension of our brain. Our brain scans information similar to the internet and it also can freezes up like our brain.

I believe that the internet is an extension of a pesrson's mind. So much goes on in one's mind, just like within the cyberspace of the internet. Just like the human mind, the internet is a colorful playground for the imagination. Once you log-on, there's no limit to where you can go or what you can do or see. One's imagination is free to wander and dream both on the internet and within the human mind.

I find what hope stated in her comment interesting. I hadn't thought of the internet being like the mouth. Its true though. the internet has the same capabilities as the mouth. The internets basic job is to relay information; just like the mouth.

What jermeka said about the internet being like one's conscience is quite a unique way to look at what the internet is an extension of. I understnad what she saying; however, i dont really agree that the internet is always searching for truth like a conscience does. There are many instances that the internet just settles for what everyone does or wants to do or hear.... that's just my opinion though.

I agree with Franki in the fact that the internet is an extension of our imagination. Our imagination and the internet are precious things that no one can take from us and as long as we are using it, it only gets better and better.

I agree with cheryl B. that the internet is an extension of our curiosity. Not only is the internet like our curiosity, it helps enhance it.

I also like the comment that Cheryl B. left about my response, when she said that our brain freezes up, just like the internet. This also is very true!

I say that overall the internet is an extension of the intellignce.

I do not believe that the internet represents our conscious, for I would say that for the most part, the interent does not have one. And I know nothing of the frontal lobe used by Valrie (show off), and once again Krystal has an indepth idea that explains a deeper meaning of the mind, maybe more of knowledge, for our minds learn naturally, just as the internet continually grows, so can and does our mind. We learn, no matter what, we are are always learning, so I agree with Krystal that the internet is perhaps our "indepth ablility to learn"

With the vast amount of information in the internet, and tha vast amount our mind/brain can learn, it would be easy to say that they are the same. But that would suggest that the internet is the foundation of information altogether, and that is not the case, for as our dear Mr. Craig has previously stated in class, the internet's information is not formed on it's own, but gathers information from others sources, and that again confims the belief that the internet is again the ability to learn and gather information, not the foundation of the information of itself. So I disagree that the internet is the brain itself. I can see the idea of the mouth, but I do believe that if the internet is of the mouth, then it is the mouth of a madman who should be locked up. For tons of the information of the internet is inconsequential, foolish, and well, just not the type of information that should be available. So I diagree with the mouth as well. I love the idea of the imagination, but again, the internet, while maybe once a "dream" was formed off knowledge and work and did not "pop" up like a beloved dream, so I disagree with imagination as well. I agree with that the internet could be our curiosity, but again the curiousity to gather and learn information. Thus our intelligence. Forgive my spelling and "good job?"

I see the internet as the social aspect of our personality. The internet is an extension of our human need to interact with one another and to become more knowledgable. We go to the internet in order to reach out to people, seek knoweldge and even build relationships the same as we interact with others for these same reasons. The internet to me in a way represents human interaction.

I agree with those who compared the internet with the brain or mind to a certain extent. Brain is the first thought that came to my mind, but after thinking about it more I saw it as something less concrete than the brain. I like the analogy Mary Beth and Kendal both used of searching our brains for specific information being almost like a google search.

I think that Jermeka's opinion of looking at the internet is a very interesting way of looking at it. I think that she, like me sees it as something less concrete and more like a function of human personality. Though I don't think that the internet directly parallels the human conscience, she brings up some very accurate comparisons between the two.

I agree with Hannah because we both siad the internet is an extension of the mind. I liked how she described the internet as a colorful playground for the imagination. I agree there are no limits to where both the internet and mind can explore.

I found Valerie's comparison of the frontal lobe of the brain to the internet very interesting. They definitely relate to each other, whether intaking the information or accessing it. Both elements continously flow that contribute to the overall communication process.

I'd say the Internet is the extension of our heart.... :)

Kidding, I agree that it is a lot like our mind. However, our mind doesn't express, it tells us to express and what to express. Sense the Internet is the expression of many ideas in many forms of media, maybe a better extension description would be our eyes, ears, and voices.

We search this technology to find what people say or do. Youtube lets us see what others want us to see (as does every website), the Internet has no control over the fact that people use it to express, it simply is the way they go about expressing.

replace "Sense" with "Since"

thank you.

Jon's comment about our mind continually growing much like the internet is a good way of linking the front lobe (my interpretation) to the internet.

Krystal mentioned that the internet and our brind continually flow as they intake information. This idea shows the similarities between the frontal lobe and the internet when relating to communication.

The internet is an extension of the human imagination. Anything an individual can imagine, they can find on the internet, whether it be processed in images or words. There is no limit to imagination, and there is no limit to what you can imagine to find on the internet.

I also agree with cheryl b that the internet is an extension of our curiosity. The internet may solve a lot of people's curiosity. Also Curiosity killed the cat so if your a cat that surfs the internet you might b in danger.

In being probably the last to post, I have found truths in all the previous posts. As Marybeth pointed out, the internet is an extension of our brain. It is cognitive. We use it for research, education and knowledge. As Hope said, it is an extension of our mouth. With blogs, e-mails and chat rooms it is communicative. Franki said it was an extension of our imagination. With the ability to download music, pictures, quotes, and so much more, the internet provides endless possibilities for one to create both artistically and technically. Finally, and probably summarily, I think Hannah makes the best point. The internet is an extension of our mind. The human mind includes all of the characteristics mentioned...thinking, creating, communicating, and so much more. By simply logging onto the internet - the possibilities are endless, just like the mind.

Once again Ms Karen has the best answer in the class. I shoulda cheated off Ms. Karen lol

I would have to agree with mary beth. I feel as though the internet is like our brain. The internet processes information and ecides where it needs to go much like our brain. It is a piece of the human brain, made by the human brain.
