Good morning Oral Communicators and welcome to your virtual class for Friday, September 5, 2008. There are two things we're going to do today, one of which will be considered homework. If you have any questions, feel free to shoot me an e-mail at craigt@warner.edu. Since I am away from campus, I may not get back to you immediately, but be patient.
For the lecture section, I'd like to you to listen to this podcast episode for The Public Speaker.
Here is the mp3 file. If you'd like to read along, which I would suggest, the full text is here.
After you finish listening and processing the information, use the comment section for this blog to write a response to what you heard. Was it useful? How do you approach breathing? What are some of your concerns as you begin working on your first presentation. It is important to write in the comment section, because this is how I am taking roll for class. Also, when you write your comment, please include your name, so I'll know it's you.
That's the first part. Now the homework:
You are going to listen to a speech, the link to which you'll find below. After listening, I'd like you to identify the structure of the speech. Consider these questions: What was the statement of central idea of the speech? What were the main points? What devices did the speaker use to link the parts together? etc. Consult the reading assigned for Monday for help.
The speech is the 2006 keynote address at the 54th annual National Prayer Breakfast. The speaker is Bono, the lead singer of the band U2. Here is a link to an audio file of the speech. Here is a link to the full text of the speech. Feel free to use both.
As you pull the parts together, write up a 1-2 page report/analysis of your findings. Please, use proper English (you should have already taken Composition 2, so that shouldn't be a problem). Spelling and grammar count. Bring your analysis to class on Monday and be prepared to share your findings.
Other than that, have a great weekend. I'll miss you on Friday.

It was helpful, I didn't know that breathing right could reduce stress and give you more energy. It makes since that the more air you take in the more confident you will sound. I knew from playing soccer that it's better to breathe in long, slow and consistent breaths instead of short fast breaths.
Robert Highley
This was a helpful speech to listen to. I learned that deep relaxed breathing helps eliminate nervous energy. Also breathing will help you create energy and produce excitement with your speaking. Biologically proper breathing techniques help all the body systems work more efficiently.
Joshua Kornegay
This speech taught me a lot and was helpful. I didn't know that deep breathing could help relieve nervous energy and help to develop a strong voice. I didn't realize how something so simple as breathing can affect the body in so many ways.
Sara Ford
This was pretty interesting. I learned that you should take time to practice breathing at different times of the day. I also learned that deep breathing can reduce stress and make you less nervous.
Melody Tenney
After listening to this speech I learned that deep breathing could help relieve stress and help you give a better speech. Practicing to breathe with help you not thinking about breathing while you are giving your speech so you don't have another thing to have to worry about.
Josh Havens
After listening to this speech i realized that it is very important to take the right type of breathes. That breathing right will help you sound better and louder when it comes to speaking proberly, and that most people lift there shoulders up instead of breathing correctly. Michael Alvarado
The speech taught me that u have to do everything right when you are giving a speech even breathing. I never knew how breathing could help u get ride of your jitters during a speech.
This speech was informative and interesting. I never knew there was really a right and a wrong way to breathe. Breathing with your shoulders is not helpful at all, but yet when I try to relax I do find myself breathing with my shoulders. Reading about how to practice breathing so you are relaxed made a lot of sense as well.
Ashley Even
The speech taught me that you have to breathe in order to calm your self down. The deep breaths help to calm everything down and help you focus on your speech. Breathing helps control your nerves while giving a speech. In baseball we are taught that breathing helps you focus and I didnt know it was also good for giving speech's.
Ray Sherrouse
I never knew that breathing helped you doing your speech, listening to this speech was very helpful to me. I also learned that breathing deep helps eliminate stress.
Stevens Cabas
It was definitily interesting. The lady was kind of dorky, but it was kind of funny therefore keeping me interested. I'm sure the breathing excercises do help to calm someone down right before their speech, but taking some huge breaths during their speech would be kind of obvious. All in all I think the breathing helps people out.
Lauren Kisner
I didn't realize that breathing could be such a vital part in speaking (or anything nerve-recking in that matter). Thinking back I normally do find myself automatically taking deep breathes before recitals and whatnot...the tricky thing is breathing deep breathes correctly (for ex. without moving my shoulders).
Rachel Du Bois
This was very informative; I really didn’t know that my breathing could help me with speaking in front of my peers or anywhere else. Also when we use proper breathing it’s beneficial to our health, having our shoulder back and not up we get more oxygen into our lungs and that helps up become more relax. So in the end this speech taught me an effective ways that I could use to improve on my speaking and help to eliminate myself becoming so nervous.
Beyond giving speeches, and calming nerveous energy, learning how to breathe correctly is vital. Even though I've had to learn this lesson the hard way, Lisa Marshall confirms this through her speech. It was a good reminder for me as to why chest breathing through my shoulders is not the best way to calm my nerves. It also feels better to take in a deep breath of air every now and then, even if I'm not giving a speech.
So this teaches you how to breathe... for some reason i know most of this from running you do your best when your heart rate is consistant. which is mostly caused from breathing. Not much to say from me
Alex Russell
Breathig right is good for everything mmostly in sports but i didnt realize or thought about this when giving a speech but it makes a lot of sense and it will really work for me because deep breathing can reduce stress and makes you less nervous.
Jean Pierre Jimenez
This was a good reminder for me to hear. I used to play an instrument for 5 years and this was how I was taught how to breathe while playing. When breathe I usually do use my shoulders and do not sit up straight. I did not know that deep breathing would add energy into my speeches and hopefully it will allow me to talk slowly. My concerns working on my presentation is how to make it interesting so people are sitting there hoping for it to end.
Brooke Krabill
This speech was definitly very interesting and helpful. I never knew there was wrong way or right way to breath in everyday life. I mean in sports you have to find a way of breathing that is right for you when you run but I didnt realize that meant for everyday living. I also learned that breathing helps relieve stress and nervous energy which is good to know for future speeches.
Heather Romanosky
this speech was really helpful because i did not know if you take a deep breath it would reduce stress and make you less nervous in any kind of way. i learn a lot about breathing it was a great speech.
Bryson Francois
I do beleive it was helpful so when we do actually start giving our speeches we know the right way to breathe so we don't gather air in the wrong way and make us look not norma.
Tory Edwards
This speech was very informative and taught me that if we learn how to breathe correctly it could improve many things in our life. It helps us to relax, and also improves the way people listen to us when we are communicating. Proper breathing helps the body to work the way it is supposed to.
Amanda Abell
This speech was very helpful. I didnt know that breathing right would affect the way you give a speech. this will help greatly when we start giving speeches.
Josh Bartley
This speech was very helpful, and made me realize that I don't always breathe properly. I usually don't have to think too hard about breathing which explains why I'm not doing it correctly. Now I know that breathing properly will greatly benefit me, specially when trying to get rid of the butterflies.
Samantha Seitz
This speech was very helpful to me because it is talking about breathing while your giving your speech. I didnt know that deep breathing gave you more excitement and energy.
Emilee Sexton
I found this speech to be very helpful because monotone speakers are very annoying and hard to listen to. By breathing this would allow for more up and downs in someone's voice. I did not know that breathing took practice.
Kyle Drexler
This speech was very informative, and it was a good reminder for me of some breathing techniques that I learned in track in high school. I never really thought that that same technique could be used for speaking. Obviously, that little energy boost you get from this deep breathing will show postively in your speech.
Jeff Valentine
After listening and reading the speech, I found it to be very helpful. I didn't know that there were incorrect ways to breathe. now I know for when I give a speech, to breathe with my stomach not my shoulders.
Watching this I realize that the way I breathe can affect how my speech goes. If i breathe slow and deep I'll be calmer and be able to get through my speech.
Heather Norris
I thought the speech was very helpful. I also found it interesting. I learned many things I did not know from listening to what she had to say. I never knew there was a right way to breathe. I did the excercise and found out that you do get more oxygen in your lungs by breathing with your stomache than by moving your shoulders up. I really liked the speech.
I knew breathing was important when it comes to giving speaches, but this is the first time I have actually listened to someone explain the proper way to breath. It actually makes sense and should prove useful in this class.
Kyle Janovsky
This breathing exercise can help in many ways. One, by helping relax and calm yourself down by breathing deeply. Also with the deep breaths, you will be able to get more air in your lungs so that you will be able to get more words out with every breath
Tyler Crews
This speech seems really helpful. I will have to try it next time i speek in front of a group. I think that the breathing exercises will help me perform better and hopefully it will keep my mind off of how nervous i am.
Tyler Wesson
I thought it was very informative.. I didnt know how much breathing affected your ability to speak effectively. However, it does make sense that when we breath properly and deeply it helps us to relax and therefore calm down. This information will definately help, practice makes perfect.
Brittni Deatherage
The speech was a big eye opener on how to breathe. I did not know breatheing was such a huge deal in speaking to public. Net time I have to make a speech or talk to some freinds about something I wam going to try and use the techniques of proper breathing while speaking. I think it will help me prepare a lot more than if I had not uesed it.
